Library Director
The Board of Trustees of the Maryville Community Library District in Maryville, Illinois, seeks a vibrant, community-focused leader to serve as Library Director. The library serves nearly 10,000 residents of the Village of Maryville and nearby vicinity. Maryville is a thriving small community located about twenty miles from downtown St. Louis, Missouri. This area is a quiet community made up of families and small business with a strong community spirit.
The library is recognized for its friendly staff, supportive library board, and involved community. The next Director will be someone who continues to cultivate an inclusive culture that encourages, celebrates, and values the community that Maryville serves. Maryville will benefit from a collaborative administrator willing to make important connections with the schools, park, Village, and local businesses.
About the Opportunity
The successful candidate will be an individual who is aware of the needs and interests of the Maryville community, but who is also able and willing to take the next steps to ensure that the library continues to move forward with innovative ideas and the latest in services and resources. The Director should exhibit effective communication skills and utmost respect for others that combines leadership with vision, collaboration, and dedication. This is a full time, exempt position with an annual salary.
The Director will be an advocate for the library, enthusiastically participating in community events and forging strong bonds with community leaders, staff, the board, and the public.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Strong leadership qualities with the ability to guide the library and engage with staff and Library Board in a professional manner that promotes trust and teamwork
- Acts as professional/technical advisor to library board of trustees on policy, finances, planning, library performance, and laws affecting libraries.
- An understanding of current and emerging trends in library operations including customer service, technology, programming, and funding
- High-level managerial and leadership experience with a demonstrated ability to make sound financial and planning decisions
- Excellent communication and people skills
- Knowledge of budgeting and fiscal matters, including grant writing
- Knowledge of library fundamentals and duties
- Ability to recruit, develop, evaluate, and supervise library staff
- Continue to upskill self by attending learning opportunities
- Maintain memberships in appropriate professional library organizations
- Oversee the selection and maintenance of library materials
- Participate in community events to advocate for the library
- At Least five years of experience working in a Library
- At least three years of experience in Library administration and management is most preferred
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree but a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited school is preferred.

Youth Services Coordinator
The Maryville Community Library is seeking a dynamic and creative Youth Services Coordinator. Serving the Library’s youngest patrons and their caregivers, plan and present varied programs, provide reference and reader’s advisory services, and assist with the selection of the collection materials. They will bring a dedicated work ethic and a desire to join a great team of coworkers looking to grow the Maryville Community Library.
Essential Functions, Responsibilities, and Duties
- Plan, coordinate, and facilitate assigned services, projects, and programs, including a yearly Summer Reading Challenge.
- Assist the Director with the selection and maintenance of the circulating children’s collections in accordance with the Library’s Collection Development Policy.
- Initiate, plan, and present varied programs for children from birth through high school and their caregivers in support of department goals and community needs.
- Serve customers at in-person service points through expert-level reference, reader’s advisory, and basic technology assistance to children from birth through high school and their caregivers.
- Plan, promote, and provide outreach services for area schools, civic, and community organizations.
- Actively promote library services, materials, and programs to customers.
- Demonstrate good stewardship of physical spaces by preparing and merchandising department displays, continually maintaining interactive areas.
- Attend and participate in library-related meetings, trainings, seminars, and conferences as assigned.
- Assist with and perform circulation duties and other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required.
- At least 5 years of experience working with children/youth, including children’s programming.
- Previous Library experience required.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
- Knowledge of books/literature for children birth-high-school.
- Able to use computers, software, and other technologies used at a public library.
- Ability to work days, nights, and weekends.
- Valid Drivers License.
This is a full time, exempt position with a starting salary of $41,600.
